Italy sees sharp rise in gasoline and diesel prices

Fuel prices in Italy continued to climb in early July 2026. The average self‑service price for gasoline reached €1.87 per litre on the road network and €1.96 per litre on highways, while diesel rose to €1.985 per litre on the road network and €2.064 per litre on highways. According to consumer group Codacons, the end of a €5‑cent per litre tax cut on 3 July contributed to the increase, but the rise exceeds the loss of the discount, reflecting broader market pressures linked to renewed Iran‑U.S. tensions.

Between 3 July and 11 July, the national average price of gasoline rose by €0.074 per litre and diesel by €0.103 per litre. Codacons translated these changes into household impact, estimating that a full tank of gasoline now costs about €3.7 more and a full tank of diesel about €5.1 more than three days earlier. The timing coincides with the start of the summer travel season, amplifying the financial burden on families.

The Italian government, represented by Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, indicated no immediate plan to cut fuel taxes, leaving consumers to bear the higher costs.
