Italy sees net gain in young graduates as foreign arrivals offset domestic brain drain

Italy is experiencing a complex demographic shift characterized by a simultaneous loss of domestic talent and an increase in foreign arrivals. Data from the Cgia di Mestre and Istat indicate that between 2019 and 2024, approximately 78,000 Italian university graduates aged 25 to 34 moved abroad. However, this loss of human capital is being offset by the arrival of nearly 88,000 foreign graduates, resulting in a net positive balance of approximately 9,600 young professionals.

Broader immigration trends show significant shifts in origin. While arrivals from European countries have declined, there has been a notable surge in migration from Asia and North Africa. Specifically, arrivals from Morocco have seen a substantial increase, and Bangladesh has emerged as a major contributor to Italy’s foreign population.

Regarding the management of unaccompanied foreign minors, the Italian Ministry of the Interior has announced the expansion of the SAI (System for Reception and Integration) network. The initiative aims to fund over 3,200 new reception places for adults, minors, and vulnerable individuals. This comes amid reports highlighting the economic challenges faced by local municipalities and the high rate of minors leaving the formal reception system.
