Italy sees surge in divorces among couples over 50

Italian statistics show a sharp rise in separations among mature couples, dubbed “gray divorces.” According to ISTAT, divorces involving people aged 60 or older have nearly tripled over the past decade, and one in four divorces now involves partners over 50. In 2024 the number fell slightly to 77,364, a 3.1% drop from the previous year, but the overall trend remains strong.

Experts attribute the increase to late‑life crises triggered by retirement, the “empty‑nest” effect, greater economic independence—particularly for women—and shifting cultural attitudes that view marriage as a choice rather than an obligation. Psychologists note that more free time, changing personal identities, and new social opportunities (online and through hobbies) encourage couples to reassess long‑standing relationships.

The phenomenon reflects broader changes in Italian society, where older adults are seeking personal fulfillment and autonomy, even after decades of marriage.
