Italy sees surge in nursing degree applications

Italy is seeing a significant resurgence in interest in nursing education. Data from the National Federation of Nursing Orders (FNOPI) and academic researchers show that approximately 22,000 candidates are applying for nursing degree programs, marking a 16.3% increase in applications compared to the previous year.

This trend reverses several years of declining interest. While 20,672 spots are available for the upcoming academic cycle, there remains a gap between available positions and the estimated regional need, which is approximately 25,479 nurses. The ratio of applicants to available spots has risen to 1.06 nationally, up from 0.92.

Regional data shows high demand across the country. Northern Italy saw a 19.5% increase in applications, while Southern Italy and the islands maintain the highest applicant-to-spot ratios. Notably, the University of Cagliari reported 3.2 applicants for every available position, and the University of Naples Federico II saw a 63.1% surge in applications.

Labor unions, including Nursing Up, have characterized this as a vital recovery for the sector but warn that policymakers must address underlying issues to sustain this momentum. Key concerns include the need for competitive salaries, improved working conditions, increased scholarships, and strategies to reduce the high dropout rates observed in first-year students.
