Italy grapples with series of shootings, protests and road accidents

A series of violent incidents and accidents have unfolded across Italy. In Naples, a 33‑year‑old man was wounded in the shoulder after shots were fired near the Ammène bar in Piazza Bellini early on 25 July. In the nearby town of Cardito, a 63‑year‑old man was arrested for attempted homicide after a heated argument escalated into a shooting, while his two sons were charged with assault. The anti‑high‑speed‑rail (No Tav) protests in the Val di Susa intensified, with clashes near the Chiomonte construction site leaving about 60 police officers injured and multiple vehicles set ablaze. Road safety incidents also surged: a Peugeot 208 crashed into a pole near Corato, injuring three; a Milanian driver was arrested for hit‑and‑run homicide of an elderly cyclist; a construction worker was crushed by a street‑sweeper in Rome; a motorcyclist died after colliding with a truck near Montichiari; and several other cyclists and motorists suffered serious injuries in accidents across the country. Domestic violence cases added to the toll, with arrests made in Licata and Moio Alcantara after men assaulted mothers, nieces and police officers. Authorities continue investigations into each event.
