Viterbo Cimini woods shooting exposes migrant drug‑trafficking network
On 25 July 2026 a young North‑African man was shot in the leg while trying to leave an encampment in the Cimini woods near Viterbo. He was taken to Santa Rosa hospital and, according to authorities, his injuries were not life‑threatening.
The Carabinieri’s investigative unit in Viterbo is examining whether the shooting is linked to a dispute over drug‑selling territories. Prosecutors say the forest hosts an organised drug operation run by two brothers who supply cocaine, heroin and other substances. Young migrants from North Africa are allegedly forced to act as runners, under threat of armed violence.
Police have seized pistols, rifles, ammunition, knives, about 900 g of hashish and electronic devices from hidden camps in the woods. The case is being treated as a possible attempted homicide and kidnapping, and investigators continue to pursue the shooter(s).
