Italy Senate President La Russa threatens lawsuit against historian Ponzani

Senate President Ignazio La Russa has announced intentions to sue historian Michela Ponzani for statements deemed 'gravely injurious' to his honorability. The dispute stems from comments made by Ponzani, a professor at Tor Vergata University, regarding the 1973 Milan riots.

Ponzani suggested that if a security decree similar to the one recently approved by the Meloni government had been in place in 1973, the current Senate President might not hold his position today. She referenced the historical event where La Russa led an unauthorized neo-fascist demonstration that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old police officer.

In response to the legal threat, Ponzani stated she has no intention of apologizing, asserting that the role of historians in a democracy is to challenge convenient narratives rather than celebrate power. La Russa indicated he would only withdraw the lawsuit if immediate apologies were issued. The incident has sparked a broader debate regarding the distinction between institutional roles and partisan political speech, as well as the boundaries of historical research and public responsibility.
