Italy advances legal protections for 12 million unpaid caregivers
On the occasion of European Caregiver Day, discussions in Italy have intensified regarding the legal recognition and protection of family caregivers. Currently, over 12 million adults in Italy provide unpaid assistance to relatives or friends, with approximately 4.4 million living with the person they care for.
The Italian Chamber of Deputies recently held a general discussion on bill C. 2789-A, which aims to define the legal status of family caregivers and establish procedures for their recognition. The proposed legislation seeks to provide tools to balance caregiving with professional life, including options such as remote work, part-time arrangements, and increased schedule flexibility.
Financial measures are also being addressed. The 2026 budget law has established a fund to support legislative interventions for caregivers, with an allocation of 1.15 million euros for 2026 and a planned 207 million euros annually starting in 2027.
