Italian professional sports face systemic financial fragility
The 2026 Annual Report from the Independent Commission for the Verification of Economic and Financial Equilibrium of Professional Sports Societies highlights significant structural fragility within the Italian sports system. The report, presented at the Chamber of Deputies, reveals that 49 professional clubs have faced between two and six bankruptcies or dissolutions over the last forty years, with Sambenedettese and Taranto tied for the highest frequency at six incidents each.
In Serie A, the financial landscape is highly polarized. Only 20% of the 20 clubs are classified as having a relatively solid economic profile. The remaining clubs fall into categories ranging from those relying heavily on player trading to those facing high tension due to intensive investment or operational fragility. The report notes that the average ratio of operating costs to total revenue stands at 108%, indicating systemic spending issues.
Beyond professional football, the report addresses broader governance and institutional tensions. FIGC President Giovanni Malagò recently met with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti to discuss the potential receivership of the Federation. Additionally, the report underscores the need for strengthened oversight to manage the recurring cycle of club failures, promotions, and subsequent financial collapses that characterize the lower tiers of Italian professional sports.
