Italy strengthens pediatric obesity prevention efforts

Health authorities in Italy are intensifying efforts to combat childhood obesity, a phenomenon described as a global emergency known as ‘globesity’. In Italy and Europe, nearly 10% of children are obese, while approximately 20% are overweight.

To address this, the Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (Sipps) has officially joined the Ministry of Health’s National Observatory for the study of obesity. This institutional move aims to integrate scientific expertise into public policy, focusing on nutritional education, breastfeeding promotion, physical activity, and psychosocial well-being.

Medical experts emphasize that prevention must be multidisciplinary, involving pediatricians, psychologists, schools, and institutions. Key recommendations include returning to simple, unprocessed foods, following a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and ensuring at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Experts also warn that socioeconomic factors play a role, as lower-income families may rely on cheaper, less healthy food options. Beyond physical risks like cardiovascular and metabolic issues, obesity can lead to emotional consequences, including bullying and social isolation.
