Italy submits National Nature Restoration Plan to the European Commission

Italy has submitted its proposal for the National Nature Restoration Plan to the European Commission, in accordance with EU Regulation 2024/1991. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (MASAF), aims to protect and recover biodiversity while strengthening ecosystem resilience against climate change.

Minister Gilberto Pichetto described the plan as a strategic investment to balance natural capital protection with sustainable development. The proposal was developed with technical support from ISPRA and CREA and included public consultations. Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida noted that the work aimed to address concerns regarding the Green Deal by ensuring measures do not penalize businesses or national food security.

The European Commission now has six months to evaluate the proposal for consistency with EU regulations, with a view toward a final transmission by September 2027.
