Italy Supreme Court finalizes sentences in 2016 Andria train crash
Italy's Supreme Court, the Cassazione, has issued final rulings regarding the 2016 train collision between Andria and Corato, one of the country's deadliest railway disasters. The collision resulted in 23 deaths and 58 injuries.
The court confirmed the sentences for Vito Piccarreta, the Andria station master, who received six years and three months in prison, and Nicola Lorizzo, the train conductor, who was sentenced to six years and nine months.
The ruling also finalizes the acquittals of Ferrotramviaria's former general manager Massimo Nitti, former operations director Michele Ronchi, and the company itself. This decision follows a failed appeal by the Bari general prosecutor, who had argued that the responsibility for the disaster should extend to corporate safety management rather than resting solely on the station master and conductor.
