Italy Supreme Court issues rulings on port authority and Casalesi clan extortion
The Italian Supreme Court, Corte di Cassazione, has issued two significant rulings involving organized crime and administrative misconduct.
In the first case, the Court annulled a previous ruling by the Florence Court of Appeal regarding the Livorno Port System Authority. The original appeal had convicted former president Stefano Corsini, former general secretary Massimo Provinciali, and businessman Corrado Neri for ideological falsehood related to temporary concessions at the Darsena Toscana. The Supreme Court has overturned these convictions and dismissed the right of civil parties to seek damages, effectively reinstating the initial acquittal from the Livorno Tribunal.
In a separate matter, the Corte di Cassazione finalized sentences for a network of extortionists operating on behalf of the Casalesi clan. The ruling validates sentences for 12 individuals involved in extorting merchants and entrepreneurs in Aversa and surrounding areas between 2000 and 2010. Prison orders have been issued for several defendants, including Agostino Fabozzo, who received 23 years, and Gaetano De Biase, sentenced to 22 years.
