Italy approves 2027 car tax exemption for millions of vehicles
The Italian government has approved a suspension of the car tax (bollo auto) for the year 2027. This measure is intended to benefit approximately 14.5 million vehicles, representing over 70% of the national fleet. The exemption applies to individuals owning a single vehicle with a maximum power of up to 80 kW (approximately 109 HP), including petrol, diesel, and hybrid models. Additionally, the exemption covers all motorcycles and mopeds regardless of displacement or power, provided the owner does not already benefit from the car exemption.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has indicated that the government intends for this to be a structural, permanent measure, with future coverage to be managed through the national budget law. The estimated cost of the exemption is approximately 2.36 billion euros. To compensate for the lost revenue, the state plans to provide funds to the regions.
The decision has sparked significant political debate. Critics, including the Cgil Calabria union and some political figures, have labeled the move an electoral tactic designed to gain popularity ahead of elections without addressing structural economic issues. Regional leaders, such as those in Tuscany and Liguria, have expressed concerns regarding the impact on regional budgets and the potential loss of funding for essential public services like healthcare.
In a separate development, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced plans to propose a decree to postpone the ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles in certain areas to provide relief to motorists.
