Italy suspends national trucking strike after government tax relief deal

The coordination body UNATRAS, representing Italy’s main road‑freight associations, announced the suspension of the national halt of trucking services that had been set for 25‑29 May. The decision followed an intensive meeting at Palazzo Chigi with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti and other ministers.

The government pledged a package of measures for the sector, including a tax credit of about €300 million, compensation of quarterly fuel‑tax refunds within 30 days of application, and the possibility to spread tax payments. A temporary suspension of certain taxes and contributions for June‑July will also be introduced. These provisions are to be incorporated in a decree‑law approved by the Council of Ministers on 22 May, with a permanent dialogue table to be set up at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

UNATRAS president Paolo Uggè hailed the outcome as a “responsible gesture” that secures continuity of transport and logistics services, emphasizing the importance of sector unity. ANITA president Riccardo Morelli also welcomed the measures, calling them a just response to the earlier fuel‑tax cut that had hurt firms.
