Italy-Taiwan relations strengthen through trade and tech mission

An Italian parliamentary delegation, led by Senate Vice President Gian Marco Centinaio, has concluded a mission to Taiwan aimed at strengthening bilateral ties across political, economic, and technological sectors.

A key outcome of the visit is a potential breakthrough in agricultural trade. Following discussions between Taiwanese Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare Lin Ching-yi and the delegation, the Taiwanese government expressed willingness to establish a technical working group to evaluate resuming pork imports from Italy. This would focus on processed and cured meats, which offer safeguards against African Swine Fever, a virus that previously led to import restrictions.

The mission also emphasized technological cooperation, with the delegation participating in the opening of the Italian Pavilion at SEMICON Taiwan. The cross-party nature of the delegation signals a broad Italian political consensus on the importance of maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and supporting Taiwan as a democratic partner.
