Italy targets energy electrification to drive national competitiveness

Italy is focusing on energy transition and electrification as key drivers for national competitiveness. Livio de Santoli, a member of the ARERA College, stated during the AEIT International Annual Conference that electrification, driven by transport, heat pumps, and hydrogen production, can boost the country's economic standing.

Projections for renewable energy capacity in Italy show solar and wind reaching approximately 57.2 GW in 2025, with targets of 107 GW by 2030 and 170 GW by 2040 according to the PNIEC. To support this, energy storage capacity is expected to grow from 7 GW in 2025 to 70 GWh by 2030. Achieving these goals may require investments estimated at 200 billion euros over ten years, potentially resulting in 20 billion euros in annual electricity system savings.

On a local level, the Legambiente Meratese ‘L’Ortica’ club is launching a series of weekly meetings in Merate to discuss global and local energy issues. The sessions will cover topics such as the current state of the energy transition, social justice in decarbonization, and the rise of distributed energy production.
