Italy tax authorities scale audits using AI

The Italian Revenue Agency is significantly increasing tax audits through the use of advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Monitoring has shifted from random checks to a targeted model based on predefined risk profiles identified by algorithms.

Data from the Court of Auditors indicates a massive surge in activity, with the use of analytical tools related to synthetic fiscal reliability indices growing from approximately 1,000 to 8,000 interventions over three years. These AI-driven checks cross-reference various databases to identify taxpayers with anomalies in their reliability scores.

In addition to traditional fiscal monitoring, authorities are expanding their oversight to include greenwashing. This move aims to ensure environmental transparency by scrutinizing corporate marketing claims related to sustainability.
