Italy teacher recruitment and digital competency requirements
Becoming a teacher in the Italian school system requires specific academic qualifications, teaching certifications, and the successful completion of competitive exams. According to Legislative Decree 59/2017, the recruitment and training system for secondary school teachers has undergone several modifications regarding access procedures and initial training.
Candidates with only academic titles can be placed in the third-tier institutional rankings exclusively for fixed-term substitute roles. Those who obtain teaching certification can enter the second-tier rankings for substitute positions and participate in competitions for permanent roles. Currently, 50% of permanent placements are drawn from merit-based rankings.
In addition to formal qualifications, digital competence has become a crucial aspect of modern teaching. The European DigCompEdu framework outlines 22 competencies across six areas, including instructional design, assessment, and digital inclusion. This framework serves as a professional map to help educators integrate digital tools into teaching, learning, and student development processes.
