Italy Temporarily Deactivates 850 Speed Cameras Under New Certification Rules

The Italian government has ordered the temporary shutdown of about 850 speed‑camera units because they do not yet meet the requirements of a new decree establishing a uniform certification procedure for speed‑measurement devices. Manufacturers must provide the required evidence before the devices can be re‑installed. Roughly 3,150 cameras that already satisfy the new standards will remain operational.

The decree introduces Italy’s first standardized approval process for such equipment, filling a gap in the road‑traffic law that has existed since 1992. The measure aims to create consistent nationwide standards and reduce uncertainty about the legality of speed‑camera installations, while drivers may notice fewer speed checks on some routes in the short term.
