EU SAFE defense fund: Estonia receives first payment as Italy requests 8 billion euros

Estonia has received its first installment of 351.6 million euros, representing approximately 15 percent of its total 2.3 billion euro allocation. These funds are intended to accelerate priority defense projects and strengthen regional resilience.
Italy has formally requested 8 billion euros from the SAFE program. This figure is notably lower than the 14.9 billion euros the country was eligible to access. The decision follows internal political deliberations within the Meloni government, where coalition members debated the prioritization of military spending versus other public expenditures. The funds are expected to support strategic defense programs, including the development of Lynx armored vehicles and Panther tanks.
