Italy to allow reversing at toll booths under specific conditions
A reform to the Italian Highway Code, approved by the Council of Ministers, will introduce a specific exception to the ban on reversing on motorways. While reversing remains prohibited on carriageways, ramps, interchanges, and emergency lanes, drivers will be permitted to reverse at toll booths in the event of a malfunction of barriers or other tolling devices.
The measure aims to prevent motorists from being stuck when equipment fails. However, the exception is strictly limited to cases of technical failure and does not grant general permission to reverse due to slow traffic or personal preference. The new regulations are expected to come into effect at the beginning of 2028.
Other updates in the reform include rounding down certain traffic fine amounts, allowing police to verify driver's licenses and vehicle registration electronically, and raising the age limit for driving trucks and buses to 70 years.
