Italy to ban Euro 5 diesel cars in multiple regions from October 2026

From 1 October 2026 Italy will prohibit Euro 5 diesel passenger cars from circulating in several cities across four regions – Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia‑Romagna. The restrictions vary by region: Lombardy will impose a year‑round ban on weekdays between 07:30 and 19:30, while Veneto, Piedmont and Emilia‑Romagna will apply seasonal bans covering roughly October to April with daytime limits.

The ban affects major urban centres: in Lombardy Milan, Monza, Bergamo and Brescia; in Veneto Padua, Venice, Verona and Vicenza; in Emilia‑Romagna Bologna, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, Forlì and Rimini; and in Piedmont Turin and Novara. The measure aims to improve air quality in the heavily polluted Po‑plain area. Earlier restrictions already limit older Euro 4 diesel vehicles, and Piedmont has withdrawn a previously planned stricter restriction, opting for alternative pollution‑reduction measures.
