Italy to boost core subject hours in technical institutes from 2026

The Ministry of Education and Merit has approved a revision of the technical institute reform that will re‑allocate teaching hours toward the core economic and scientific subjects in the first two years of study. The autonomous curriculum quota will be eliminated, with the restored hours aimed at strengthening the identity of technical pathways and protecting teaching posts. The new timetable will be implemented starting the 2026‑2027 school year, with detailed guidelines to follow in a ministerial notice.

Union federations, led by FLC‑CGIL, have criticised the ministry’s handling of the reform, arguing that the data on strike participation presented by the government are misleading. They claim the 1.78% turnout figure is calculated on the entire teaching staff rather than the technical institute teachers targeted by the strike. The unions maintain that the reform remains flawed, calling for its withdrawal and accusing the ministry of using the announcement to divide the teaching workforce.

Both the government and the unions agree that the changes affect teaching workloads, curriculum structure, and the stability of staff positions in technical schools across Italy.
