Italy activates Navy to protect merchant ships in Bab el-Mandeb
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has announced the activation of the Italian Navy to ensure the safe passage of national merchant vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb strait. This decision follows increased security threats from Houthi rebels in the Red Sea region, which threaten to disrupt global supply chains and increase costs for businesses and families.
Crosetto emphasized that Italy intends to act independently of the European Union’s Operation Aspides to avoid bureaucratic delays that could exacerbate the economic impact of maritime disruptions. While Italy remains a participant in the EU mission, the government is preparing for a potential national naval mission to provide direct escorts. In a recent operation within the Aspides framework, the Italian Navy fregata Carlo Bergamini successfully escorted the merchant vessel Jolly Oro through the strait. The move comes as Houthi advances along the Yemeni coast increase risks to critical maritime chokepoints, impacting both commercial shipping and essential underwater infrastructure like data and energy cables.
