Italy activates Navy to protect ships in Bab el-Mandeb

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has announced the activation of the Italian Navy to secure the transit of Italian commercial vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb strait. This decision follows increased security threats in the Red Sea and the Yemen coast, where Houthi rebels have seized control of strategic areas, threatening maritime traffic and global supply chains.

Crosetto emphasized that Italy intends to act independently of the European Union's Aspides mission to avoid bureaucratic delays that could exacerbate the economic situation. He warned that disruptions to these vital maritime routes lead to increased transportation costs, delayed deliveries, and higher prices for families and businesses. The minister noted that protecting freedom of navigation is essential for safeguarding Italy's economic security, energy supplies, and digital infrastructure, including undersea data cables.

The exact scale of the naval deployment and the number of military units to be sent will be evaluated in coordination with the Italian Government and Parliament.
