Italy to implement new consumer transparency rules for green transition

New regulations regarding consumer empowerment for the green transition will take effect in Italy on September 27, 2026. Implementing EU Directive 2024/825 through Legislative Decree No. 30/2026, these rules aim to increase transparency regarding product durability, repairability, and environmental impact.

Retailers, including those operating via e-commerce and physical stores, will face new information obligations. This includes providing standardized notices about legal guarantees of conformity and information regarding software updates, spare parts, and repairability. Additionally, companies must provide clearer information on low-impact delivery options and sustainability labels.

To prevent unfair commercial practices, new rules strictly regulate environmental claims. Companies will only be permitted to use sustainability marks based on recognized certification systems or those established by public authorities. The regulations apply across various sectors, including clothing, appliances, food, and cosmetics, and cover all communication channels such as packaging, websites, social media, and advertising. Non-compliance may result in sanctions of up to 10 million euros.
