Italy to introduce digital voter cards for upcoming elections
Italy is introducing a digital voter card to simplify the electoral process. Announced by the Minister for Public Administration, Paolo Zangrillo, the digital certificate will be available on smartphones starting from the next election cycle.
The digital version aims to resolve common issues such as lost paper cards or cards with exhausted spaces for voting stamps. The document will be integrated into the digital ecosystem via the IO app and IT Wallet, linked to the National Resident Population Registry (ANPR) for real-time data access.
Crucially, this change does not enable remote or online voting. Citizens must still physically go to their designated polling stations to cast their votes; the smartphone will only serve as a digital substitute for the physical registration certificate.
