Italy to include opera in high school literature curricula

Italian Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara has announced that melodrama and opera will be officially integrated into the Italian literature curriculum for all high schools (licei). The initiative aims to recognize opera as a fundamental element of the nation’s cultural and historical identity, treating it as a literary chapter alongside traditional authors like Alessandro Manzoni.

Under this plan, Italian teachers will be responsible for teaching opera librettos and their literary value. The Ministry has stated that no additional funding or specialized external instructors will be required, as existing faculty are expected to possess the necessary knowledge of major works, such as Verdi’s ‘Nabucco’.

The announcement has sparked debate regarding the historical accuracy of the move. Some critics argue that the characterization of opera as a unifying national force for all citizens is historically fragile and potentially overlooks the regional and class-based nuances of how music and literature were consumed in the past.
