Italy to revise medical rules for Repatriation Centers
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has announced that the Ministry of the Interior (Viminale) is working to revise the regulations regarding medical assessments for individuals admitted to Repatriation Centers (CPR).
The move follows investigations into allegations that certain medical professionals have used health evaluations as a political or ideological tool to obstruct the repatriation of undocumented migrants. Piantedosi stated that it is unacceptable for procedures intended to protect health to be used to ‘vanish the decisions of the State’ through ‘illegal obstructionism.’
The Minister emphasized that if it is proven that medical professionals have engaged in political militancy rather than providing medical care, they will be held accountable before the justice system. The new rules aim to ensure that health verifications are conducted with punctuality and reliability while remaining compliant with Italian law, European law, and international conventions.
