Italy reforms secondary schools by renaming technical institutes
The Italian Council of Ministers has approved a decree to reform the secondary education system by changing the names of technical and professional institutes. Under the new reform, technical institutes will become “Licei tecnologici” (technological high schools) and professional institutes will become “Licei professionali” (professional high schools).
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the move as a “cultural revolution” intended to eliminate the long-standing prejudice that technical and professional paths are “second-class” compared to traditional high schools. The government aims to grant these paths equal dignity and better align education with the needs of the productive sector.
In addition to the name changes, the reform includes a revision of the teaching hours for technical institutes and an allocation of 10 million euros to support campuses within the technological-professional training chain. The measure is part of a broader strategy that includes the “4+2” reform and the “Liceo del Made in Italy” to bridge the gap between school and the labor market.
