Europe prepares for 2026 winter time transition

Across Europe and several other regions, the transition from daylight saving time to winter time is scheduled for the night of Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, October 25, 2026. During this transition, clocks will be set back one hour at 03:00 to 02:00, providing an extra hour of sleep but resulting in earlier sunsets and longer nights.

While most modern electronic devices like smartphones and computers update automatically, manual adjustment is required for analog clocks and certain older devices. The practice, originally intended to optimize natural light and save energy, remains a standard under European Union directives, despite ongoing debates regarding its necessity.

Scientific and medical discussions continue regarding the impact of seasonal time changes. Experts note that the shift can cause a “mini jet lag,” leading to sleep disturbances, irritability, and mood variations due to the disruption of the body's natural circadian rhythm. Economically, the changes can also impact logistics and financial transaction systems. Although the European Parliament has previously supported proposals to abolish seasonal time changes, a final consensus among member states has not yet been reached.
