Italy tourism sector shows strong summer growth
Italy is experiencing a robust summer tourism season, characterized by significant growth in several sectors. National estimates from Assoturismo Confesercenti suggest approximately 96.7 million overnight stays in August, a 1.1% increase compared to 2025. During the Ferragosto week, Italy's occupancy rates reportedly exceeded those of Spain and France.
The Abruzzo region has emerged as a major success story, reporting a 7.2% increase in arrivals and a 7.7% increase in stays during the first half of 2026, outperforming the national average. Notably, growth in Abruzzo's small municipalities reached 10.9%, indicating a successful diversification of tourism into inland areas and historic villages. Regional officials attribute this to strategic investments and promotion.
Other regional trends include positive performance in Friuli Venezia Giulia, driven by an increase in visitors from Eastern Europe and a rise in last-minute bookings. Additionally, the Italian beer tourism sector is expanding, with 13 million people participating in themed experiences. While the tourism sector shows strength, the summer cinema season also saw a notable surge, particularly in cities like Turin, driven largely by international blockbuster productions.
