Italy sees rise in staycations as economic pressures limit travel

Data from Tecnè and Federalberghi indicate a significant shift in Italian summer holiday habits for 2026. Approximately 48.5% of the adult population, or 24.2 million people, are expected to opt for a ‘staycation’—spending their holidays within their own cities or homes rather than traveling.

Economic factors are the primary driver for this trend, with 52.8% of respondents citing high living costs, including bills, food, and fuel, as the reason for not traveling. Other contributing factors include logistical issues, health concerns, and professional constraints. The phenomenon is most pronounced among retirees and those over 65, where the rate of staying home reaches 67%.

While some view the staycation as a lifestyle choice to reduce stress and explore local culture, the data suggests it is largely a financial necessity. In response, Federalberghi has proposed measures to support travel, such as enhancing corporate welfare through tax breaks on fringe benefits and implementing incentivized low-season tariffs.
