Italy traffic regulations: rules on fines and highway overtaking

Italian traffic regulations outline specific procedures and legal distinctions regarding driving violations and highway maneuvers.

Regarding parking violations, a notice left on a windshield is an informal warning rather than an official fine. While paying the notice immediately may offer a 30 percent discount, doing so can prevent a driver from exercising their right to appeal or contesting formal errors in the documentation. Drivers are advised to wait for official notification to ensure the legitimacy of the sanction.

On highways, the Italian Highway Code distinguishes between lawful lane advancement and illegal overtaking. Under Article 143, drivers must use the rightmost lane for ordinary travel, leaving left lanes for overtaking. Advancing on the right because another driver is improperly occupying a left lane is considered lawful. However, deliberately moving to the right lane to pass another vehicle is an illegal maneuver that can result in fines up to 665 euros and license suspensions of up to six months.
