Italy transforms former prisons into civic and judicial facilities
In Trento, construction has begun on a new judicial complex that will convert the former Austrian-era prison at Largo Pigarelli into a modern civic hub. The first phase, covering about 4,950 m², is funded with €19.6 million and is part of a three‑stage programme totalling over €59 million. Designed by C+S Architects, the project will house court offices, public services and meeting spaces, emphasizing transparency and public accessibility.
Meanwhile, the municipality of Ales in Sardinia has opened a public auction to lease its former municipal prison on Via Don Milani. The base rent is set at €600 per month, with a secret‑bid process and a nine‑year contract that can be extended for two additional years. Bids must be submitted by 14:00 on 4 September 2026, and the opening will take place on 9 September 2026.
Both initiatives reflect a broader Italian effort to repurpose historic detention facilities for community‑focused uses, combining heritage preservation with new public functions.
