Italy transport sector crisis sparks debate over government aid

The resolution of recent protests by the road transport sector in Italy has prompted criticism regarding the effectiveness and timing of government interventions. Political leader Carlo Calenda, speaking at the Festival del Sud in Vibo Valentia, characterized the government's aid as insufficient and delayed, noting that five months have passed between the initial decree and its implementation.

Calenda highlighted several systemic issues, including the complexity of tax credit tools and the lack of operational resources for purchasing new vehicles. He also addressed the impact of fuel costs on the transport, fishing, and agricultural sectors. To mitigate these costs, Calenda proposed increasing cigarette taxes by one euro to generate three billion euros for fuel excise reductions, a measure he claims was blocked by political opposition due to lobby pressure.

Discussions also touched upon the bureaucratic delays within ministries and the necessity of evidence-based investigations into claims of organized crime involvement in the protests.
