Italy U19 knocked out by Denmark in penalty shootout, miss U20 World Cup berth

Italy’s Under‑19 national team were eliminated by Denmark in a penalty shoot‑out after a 0‑0 draw at the Bangor City Stadium in Wales on 8 July 2026. The play‑off, which decided the final European slot for the 2027 FIFA U‑20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, ended 5‑4 in favour of the Danes. Italy goalkeeper Massimo Pessina saved one attempt, but missed penalties by Andrea Natali and Destiny Onoguekhan Elimoghale handed Denmark the advantage, and Simon Stüker converted the decisive spot‑kick.

Coach Alberto Bollini described the result as “great bitterness” for the squad despite creating 15 chances and conceding only one goal throughout the tournament. The loss follows Italy’s earlier group‑stage defeat to Ukraine, which had forced the team into the play‑off. With the shoot‑out defeat, Italy will not participate in the 2027 U‑20 World Cup, while Denmark advance to the tournament.

The match was broadcast live on Rai Sport HD and streamed via RaiPlay.
