Italy updates windshield inspection rules for vehicle safety
New guidelines from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will clarify inspection criteria for chipped windshields starting in September 2026. For vehicles up to 3.5 tons, passing a technical inspection depends on more than just the size of the damage. While a maximum chip size of 15-20 millimeters is a reference point, inspectors will also evaluate the chip's location, its distance from the edges or pillars (typically a 20-25 millimeter range), and whether it interferes with the driver's field of vision.
Windshields are made of laminated glass, meaning a stone impact usually only affects the outer layer. However, these chips can quickly evolve into cracks due to vibrations, temperature changes, or moisture. Common damage types include bullseyes, stars, and linear cracks. While small bullseyes are often repairable with resin, larger cracks or damage located within the path of the windshield wipers may necessitate a full glass replacement to ensure driver visibility and structural integrity.
