Italy urges digital non‑belligerence pact and AI content labeling

Journalist Francesco Giorgono reported that Italian political leaders are being called upon to sign a "digital non‑belligerence pact" aimed at guaranteeing transparency for content generated by artificial intelligence. The proposal emphasizes that AI‑created text, audio, video or images must be clearly labeled so citizens can identify whether a chatbot, virtual assistant, synthetic media or a human produced the material.

The pact aligns with the European Union's AI Act, particularly Article 50 which becomes operational on 2 August 2026, mandating the marking of AI‑generated content. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and opposition leader Elly Schlein have signaled support for the initiative, recalling its discussion at the G7 summit in Puglia in 2024. Officials argue the measures will curb deep‑fakes, enhance responsibility for political messaging, and ensure Italy complies with EU standards for AI transparency.
