Italy urges EU to include chemical sector in Industrial Accelerator Act
Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, is calling for the European Union to include the chemical sector in the Industrial Accelerator Act. Alongside France and the Netherlands, Italy is pushing to have the crisis of basic chemicals addressed at the upcoming Competitiveness Council.
Urso stated that the European chemical industry requires immediate intervention to preserve production capacity and a long-term strategy to restore competitiveness while supporting a sustainable transition. While the European Commission previously adopted the Chemicals Industry Action Plan and established the EU Critical Chemicals Alliance (CCA) in July 2025, Urso argued these measures are insufficient and that concrete results are needed now.
Key proposals include using the CCA's list of critical molecules as a basis for policy, strengthening trade defense tools for strategic molecules, and supporting investments for the industrial transition of European plants through the future European Competitiveness Fund. Additionally, Italy seeks to highlight the role of biochemistry within the upcoming Circular Economy Act.
