Italy vehicle breakdowns affect 11.7 million motorists annually

An investigation commissioned by Facile.it and conducted by EMG reveals that 11.7 million Italian motorists experienced vehicle breakdowns or unexpected issues in the past year. The data highlights the impact of an aging vehicle fleet, which has an average age exceeding 12 years.

Dead batteries were the most common problem, affecting 4.9 million drivers, followed by tire punctures, which impacted 3.4 million people. Other significant issues included engine failures, brake problems, and electrical control unit malfunctions, which collectively affected 3.7 million motorists. Additionally, approximately 580,000 drivers ran out of fuel.

Regarding emergency responses, 38% of affected drivers took their vehicles to a mechanic, while 27% sought help from friends or family. About 17% attempted repairs themselves. Notably, 2.6 million people required a tow truck, with an average cost of 165 euros per intervention. Despite these costs, 43% of motorists continue to drive without roadside assistance coverage, which typically costs around 32 euros annually.
