Italy vehicle registration and tax reforms for 2026
Starting January 1, 2026, Italy will implement changes to vehicle registration and taxation procedures. While the automotive tax has not been abolished or broadly reduced, new regulations will affect how payments are organized and how deadlines are determined, particularly for newly registered vehicles.
For new registrations in 2026, the tax period will be more closely linked to the date of registration. This requires owners to pay an annual fee based on specific territorial provisions and the vehicle's registration date. Existing vehicle owners will generally not see a change in their current payment deadlines.
There are also distinct bureaucratic differences between vehicle types. Mopeds (up to 50 cc) do not require registration with the Public Automobile Register (PRA) and have simpler documentation requirements. In contrast, larger scooters and motorcycles are treated similarly to cars, requiring PRA registration and taxes calculated based on kilowatt (kW) output.
