Italy warns drivers about cracked suspension springs and worn shock absorbers

Cracks in automotive suspension springs can arise from corrosion, material fatigue and sudden impacts such as hitting deep potholes. When the protective coating degrades, rust creates micro‑fissures that weaken the steel coil, while prolonged use under road shocks makes the metal brittle. These defects compromise the ability of the spring to keep the vehicle body at the proper height and may lead to loss of control.

Worn shock absorbers also reduce safety. As the internal oil loses efficiency, the wheel oscillates vertically during braking, briefly losing full contact with the road. Tests show that braking distances can increase by up to 20% when shocks are degraded, even if tire tread is in good condition. Both problems are often unnoticed until a specific symptom appears, so regular suspension inspections are essential for safe driving.
