Digital fraud rises through phishing, fake job offers, and business email compromises

Various digital fraud schemes are targeting consumers and businesses, ranging from utility scams to sophisticated professional impersonations. In Italy, CERT-AGID has warned of a phishing campaign using PagoPA branding to promise false TARI tax refunds, aiming to steal personal and credit card data. Additionally, the National Cybersecurity Agency has flagged fraudulent job interviews on LinkedIn targeting software developers, where malicious files are sent under the guise of technical tests to compromise corporate networks.

Financial crimes are also evolving through business email compromise (BEC). A Rome-based company recently lost 387,000 euros after attackers intercepted emails and altered IBAN details on invoices. Other common tactics include smishing and spoofing, where criminals impersonate law enforcement or banks to manipulate victims emotionally into transferring funds.

In response to these threats, new tools like the Oblio One app are emerging, which utilizes a “zero-server” approach to filter spam and fraudulent SMS locally on a device to enhance privacy and security.
