Italy faces severe weather with flooding, tornadoes, and regional alerts

Severe weather across Italy has triggered widespread emergencies, including flooding, landslides, and tornadoes. In the south, an orange weather alert is in effect for Naples, the Gulf islands, and the Campanian plain, with risks of landslides and rapid mudflows. In the Campania region, heavy rains have caused flooding in several municipalities, leading to school closures and emergency meetings by local authorities.

In Sicily, two powerful tornadoes struck the Marsala and Petrosino areas. The storms caused significant damage to buildings, vehicles, and agricultural structures, and resulted in nine injuries, including four children. Emergency services, including firefighters from Palermo and Agrigento, were deployed to manage the chaos.

In central Italy, Rome and its province experienced over 120 emergency interventions by firefighters due to fallen trees, collapsed cornices, and downed telephone poles. The coastal towns of Anzio and Nettuno also faced severe flooding, prompting mayors to request a state of emergency and order the closure of schools, cemeteries, and parks.

Additional reports indicate heavy rainfall across much of the country is expected to continue until Saturday, with early snow reported in the Sestriere mountains of Piedmont.
