Global weather: heatwaves in Italy and storm alerts in Brazil and US

Extreme weather events are impacting multiple regions. In Italy, the intense heatwave is beginning to ease in the central and northern areas, though southern regions like Calabria, Sicily, and Puglia continue to face high temperatures, with peaks reaching 40°C in Caltanissetta. Meteorologists expect a shift in weather patterns between September 1 and 2, as an Atlantic disturbance brings potential rain and cooler temperatures to much of the peninsula.

In Brazil, severe weather alerts are in effect. A red alert has been issued for Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul due to risks of heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. Additionally, an extratropical cyclone is expected to form in the south, potentially affecting coffee-producing regions in the southeast, including Minas Gerais, where hail poses a risk to crops.

Other notable events include Austria reporting 646 heat-related deaths during June and July 2026, and a low-pressure system near the Louisiana coast in the United States that has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.
