Italy weather: severe storms in north and incoming heatwave in south

Italy is experiencing extreme weather fluctuations, characterized by severe storms in the north and intense heatwaves in the south. In Lombardy, heavy rainfall and flooding have led to hundreds of evacuations, prompting President Attilio Fontana to request a state of emergency. Other northern regions, including Piedmont, Liguria, and Tuscany, have also reported significant damage from storms, lightning, and landslides.

Following this period of instability, a new African anticyclone is expected to bring a significant heatwave starting around August 26. Temperatures are forecasted to rise well above seasonal averages, with local peaks potentially reaching 41-42°C in areas such as Sicily, Sardinia, and parts of the south. The Ministry of Health has issued red alerts for Bari and Palermo due to these extreme conditions.

Additionally, Mount Etna has shown weak ash emissions drifting southeast, and agricultural sectors in Puglia are facing increased pressure from pests due to the rising temperatures and drought conditions.
