Italy white truffle yields drop due to heat and drought

Extreme heat and prolonged drought in Italy have severely impacted the start of the white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico) season. In key regions such as Piedmont, near Alba, and in Central Italy, yields have been disappointing, with many available specimens being notably small.

Due to the scarcity, prices are expected to rise, with reports suggesting costs could reach approximately 500 euros per 100 grams. Industry experts, including truffle broker Antonio Leo, suggest that while current prices are high, they may decrease if conditions improve in October and November.

The city of Alba is preparing for its International Truffle Fair, which runs from October 10 to December 6 and is expected to attract around 600,000 visitors. While the current outlook is cautious, some experts remain hopeful for higher-quality finds later in the season, specifically during November and December.
