Italy withdraws proposed driving restrictions for drivers over 85

The Italian government has withdrawn proposed driving restrictions specifically targeting citizens over the age of 85. During the drafting of a new Highway Code, officials considered measures such as banning elderly drivers from motorways, limiting travel to a 100-kilometer radius from their residence, and enforcing a zero-alcohol limit.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport clarified that these measures were removed to prevent discriminatory treatment, noting that age alone should not be used as a definitive proxy for a driver's physical or mental incapacity. The decision follows legal and social debates regarding the balance between public road safety and the rights of individual citizens to be judged on actual ability rather than chronological age.
