Italy's 2024 Mental Health Report Highlights Service Reach and Early‑Access Needs

The Italian Ministry of Health's 2024 Mental Health Report documents that 845,516 people were assisted by specialist mental health services, with women accounting for 55.9% and more than two‑thirds of patients over 45 years old. The same year saw 272,497 new contacts with mental health departments, the majority being individuals' first contact with the system. The report stresses that early access to territorial services can improve disorder trajectories, reduce isolation, and lower emergency admissions.

It also evaluates the capacity of regional networks—including community clinics, family doctors, psychologists, and social services—to provide continuous, proximate care. The World Health Organization’s call for a shift toward prevention, well‑being promotion, and community‑based services underpins the analysis. The document notes that many mental‑health conditions begin in adolescence or early adulthood, underscoring the importance of early interventions in schools and primary care.

The report calls for better organization to ensure timely referrals, reduce stigma, and sustain adequate staffing and resources across the territorial system.
